In August Christian and I went to Newport, Oregon for vacation. Of course Christian had gone numerous times when he was a kid (maybe when he was younger as he still acts like a kid sometimes!) and he took me for my first time two years ago. We loved it and decided that this time we would go with Christian's cousin Patrick and his wife Celeste. We loved it of course and came back with a lot of stories.Christian and I loved that it was nice and cool, unfortunately Patrick and Celeste didn't know that it was cool along the Oregon coast and so they froze to death and ended up having to buy two sweatshirts because they were cold. They have since warmed up in their 90+ degree weather in Salt Lake City.
Some of the highlights of our trip was going fishing in the middle of the ocean and crabbing in the bay. We woke up really early and drove two hours to Charleston, Oregon to go out on a fishing boat for four hours. The four of us were the people who caught the most fish on the boat.
We caught a lot of rock fish and Celeste caught a rare Canary Fish and we had to throw it back because it is a protected species. Patrick caught a really cool Tiger Rock Fish. Patrick and I caught some Ling Cod. I actually caught a rock fish at the bottom of the ocean and the Ling Cod had latched on to it trying to eat the fish and so I had to reel in both fish. Unfortunately when I got them to the surface, as soon as the net was put around the cod it spit out the other fish and it swam away. At least I got to keep my 12 pound cod. What a fish story that is though!
Christian's favorite experience was the bay crabbing. We rented a little "dingy" and decided that it would be great to go out crabbing just the four of us. Well, after almost hitting two boats as we were leaving the dock, almost getting stuck in a sand bar, running over our own crabpots' rope and it getting wound around the engine and other various adventures, we figured out how to be somewhat succesfull at crabbing on our own.
At one point I was pre-occupied and I heard Christian yelling, "HELP ME! HELP ME!" I turned around and saw that he had just pulled in a crab pot and put it in the middle of the boat and promptly fell head first into the pot. He was stuck and couldn't get up. After Celeste and I laughed at him I was able to help get him out of the crab pot. He had his life flash before his eyes as he could have sworn that a crab was going to pinch off his nose.
When we finally got the boat back to the dock, the owner of the dock cooked our crabs for us. When they were finished, we loaded up the freshly caught and cooked crab and hauled it to our car. Before we even left we had eaten a little more than one whole crab. You have never had crab until you have eaten one that is freshly cooked, it was delicious!

We also tried our hand at clamming, but to no availe. We found a place where the locals always go to get the Gaper Clams, but when we went out we couldn't find any. Instead we just walked around in the muck and then got in the car and went back to the condo. Later that day we were talking to another person who was vacationing in Newport. She had said they went clamming that morning exactly where we were at, and caught their limit! We just all looked at each other and congratulated her...but we were all frustrated!
We enjoy the different beauty that Heavenly Father created for us. I always enjoy standing on the balcony and watching the lighthouses in the midst of the fog signaling to all the ships. I enjoyed watching the pelicans dive into the water to catch their meals and the cranes at low tide.
